Post-Op Instructions
for Baby Root Canals
A baby root canal (pulpotomy or pulpectomy) requires careful post-op care to ensure healing and prevent complications. Here’s what to do after the procedure:
1. Managing Pain & Discomfort
- Mild discomfort is normal for a day or two. Give acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) as needed, following the dentist’s instructions.
- Avoid aspirin, as it can cause bleeding issues.
2. Numbness Precautions
- The child’s mouth may be numb for 2–4 hours after the procedure.
- Prevent them from biting, chewing, or sucking on their lips, cheeks, or tongue, as this can cause injury.
3. Eating & Drinking
- Wait until the numbness wears off before allowing solid foods.
- Stick to soft foods (applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies) for the first day.
- Avoid hot, crunchy, or sticky foods (e.g., chips, caramel, gum) to prevent damaging the treated tooth.
4. Oral Hygiene
- Continue brushing and flossing, but be gentle around the treated tooth.
- If recommended, use a saltwater rinse (½ teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water) after meals.
5. Activity Restrictions
- Keep the child calm for the first 24 hours—no running, jumping, or sports.
- Elevate their head while sleeping to help reduce any swelling.
6. Watch for Signs of Complications
Call the dentist if you notice:
✅ Swelling or pus around the tooth or gums
✅ Severe pain lasting more than 48 hours
✅ Fever or general illness
✅ Biting issues or the child avoiding chewing on one side for more than a few days
7. Care for the Final Restoration
- Most baby root canals are finished with a stainless steel crown to protect the tooth.
- Teach the child to avoid hard candies, sticky foods, or chewing on ice, which can dislodge or damage the crown.
