Is Your Child Experiencing a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is a situation that requires urgent care to relieve severe pain, save a damaged tooth, or stop bleeding. The following are the most common dental emergencies:
- Sharp, persistent tooth pain
- A chipped, broken, or otherwise damaged tooth
- A knocked-out or dislodged tooth
- Injury to the lips, tongue, or gums
If your child requires emergency dental care, contact our office at 571-723-4545 to schedule a same-day appointment. If the emergency occurs after office hours, call our office and leave a message—we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Note: If your child has severe symptoms, including uncontrolled bleeding, severe facial swelling, or any life-threatening emergency, dial 911 or go to the nearest ER for immediate care.

Acting quickly during a dental emergency can often save a tooth and prevent further complications.
What Are Common Dental Emergencies?
Here is a look at some of the most common dental emergencies and things you can do to help:
- Severe Toothache: Rinse the area with warm salt water and use cold compresses if there is swelling. Offer your child pediatrician-approved Motrin or alternate Tylenol and Motrin for severe pain. Never place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums to prevent irritation or damage. Make sure to call our office to address the cause of your child's pain, preventing further complications.
- A Chipped or Broken Tooth: Rinse with warm water and apply cold compresses to relieve any swelling. Pick up any pieces of the tooth and place them in milk or saliva to keep them moist and bring them with you to your child's emergency appointment. Contact us right away for prompt treatment to prevent damage to the tooth's inner layers, which can lead to pain and infection.
- Knocked-Out Baby Tooth: If your child knocks out a baby tooth, rinse the area with water and contact us immediately. Never return the tooth to its socket to prevent damage to the permanent tooth yet to erupt.
- Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth: If your child knocks out an adult tooth, carefully pick it up by its crown without touching the root and rinse it gently with plain water. Try to return the tooth into its socket, and if that's not possible, carry it in milk or saliva to keep it moist. Call us immediately for an emergency appointment.
- Dislodged Tooth: If a tooth is dislodged due to injury or trauma, rinse the area and have your child bite down on gauze to keep it in place and call our office immediately. Cold compresses can help relieve any swelling.
- Injury to the Lips, Tongue, or Gums: If your child has an injury to the lips, tongue, or gums, apply gentle pressure to stop any bleeding. Heavy, uncontrollable bleeding is a serious emergency—dial 911 or head to your nearest ER for immediate care.
- Other Dental Emergencies: Dental emergencies may include swelling, a lost crown or filling, or any other concern. Remember that emergencies are sometimes more serious than they seem, so it's best to seek emergency care to avoid complications.
Disclaimer: The above are general guidelines. Seek immediate attention from a dental professional to avoid potentially serious complications down the road.
