Post-Op Instructions
for Pediatric Dental Crowns

After your child receives a dental crown (stainless steel or white zirconia), proper care is essential to ensure comfort and long-lasting results. Here’s what to expect and how to care for your child after the procedure:

1. Numbness Precautions

  • The local anesthetic may last 2–4 hours, so your child may not feel parts of their mouth.
  • Prevent them from biting, sucking, or chewing on their lips, cheeks, or tongue to avoid injury.
  • Offer soft foods until the numbness wears off.

2. Pain & Discomfort

  • Mild soreness around the gums is normal for a day or two.
  • Give children’s ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed.
  • If pain persists beyond 48 hours, contact the dentist.

3. Eating & Drinking

  • Stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours (yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs).
  • Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods (gum, caramel, gummy candies, popcorn, hard candies) to prevent crown damage.
  • No hot foods or drinks until numbness wears off to avoid burns.

4. Oral Hygiene & Care

  • Continue brushing and flossing as usual.
  • Be gentle around the crowned tooth for the first few days.
  • If gums appear sore, a warm saltwater rinse (½ teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water) can help with healing.

5. Activity Restrictions

  • Avoid rough play or contact sports for the rest of the day.
  • Keep the child hydrated and let them rest if they feel tired after the procedure.

6. Crown Care & What to Expect

  • A stainless steel crown is very durable and should stay in place until the baby tooth naturally falls out.
  • A white zirconia crown is strong but should still be treated with care to avoid chipping.
  • The child may experience mild sensitivity for a few days, especially with temperature changes.

7. When to Call the Dentist

Call the dentist if your child experiences:
Persistent pain beyond 48 hours
Swelling, redness, or pus around the crowned tooth
Crown feels loose or falls off (save it and bring it to the dentist)
Difficulty chewing or biting down after a few days
