Post-Op Instructions
for Local Anesthesia

After your child receives local anesthesia for a dental procedure, follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery.

1. Numbness Precautions

  • The numbness can last 2–4 hours, depending on the procedure and anesthesia used.
  • Your child may accidentally bite, chew, or suck on their lips, cheeks, or tongue without realizing it, which can cause swelling or injury.
  • Prevent biting or sucking injuries by reminding them not to touch the numb area. Younger children may need extra supervision.

2. Eating & Drinking

  • Wait until the numbness wears off before eating solid foods to prevent accidental bites.
  • Stick to soft foods (yogurt, mashed potatoes, applesauce, smoothies) until full sensation returns.
  • Avoid hot foods and drinks (like soup or hot chocolate) to prevent burns, as your child may not feel the heat.

3. Pain & Discomfort

  • Some mild discomfort after the anesthesia wears off is normal. Children’s ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help if needed.
  • If pain persists beyond 24–48 hours, contact the dentist.

4. Activity Restrictions

  • Most children can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.
  • If sedation was used in addition to local anesthesia, your child may need extra rest.

5. Oral Hygiene

  • Continue normal brushing and flossing, but be gentle around the treated area.
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting for the first few hours.

6. Watch for Complications

Call the dentist if your child experiences:
Persistent numbness lasting more than 4 hours
Severe swelling or pain
Signs of infection (fever, pus, bad taste in the mouth)
Injury from biting or chewing the numb area

Most children recover quickly from local anesthesia. Supervise them until the numbness wears off to prevent lip, cheek, or tongue injuries.
