Post-Op Instructions
for Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, also known as “Laughing Gas”, is a mild sedative used to help children relax during dental procedures. It wears off quickly after the procedure, but the following aftercare steps will ensure a smooth recovery.
1. Recovery from Nitrous Oxide
- Effects wear off within 5–10 minutes after the mask is removed.
- Your child may feel slightly dizzy, lightheaded, or tired for a short time.
- Let them sit in the dental chair for a few minutes before standing up to avoid dizziness.
- Some children may feel a little nauseous, but this should pass quickly.
2. Eating & Drinking
- If your child ate before the procedure, they can resume normal eating and drinking immediately.
- If they had an empty stomach, start with small sips of water before eating a light meal.
- Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods for a few hours if nausea occurs.
3. Activity Restrictions
- Most children can return to school and normal activities right away.
- If your child still feels drowsy or lightheaded, allow them to rest until they feel normal.
- Avoid intense physical activity (running, jumping, or rough play) for a few hours if they feel tired.
4. Oral Hygiene
- Follow any specific instructions based on the dental procedure (e.g., fillings, extractions).
- If no additional procedures were done, your child can brush and floss as usual.
5. When to Call the Dentist
Contact the dentist if your child experiences:
✅ Persistent nausea or vomiting (lasting more than a few hours)
✅ Severe dizziness, confusion, or difficulty walking
✅ Unusual breathing difficulties (very rare)
Nitrous oxide is a safe and gentle sedation method that wears off quickly. If you have any concerns, feel free to reach out to your dentist! 😊
